About the IJssel

One of the most beautiful rivers in the Netherlands

The IJssel is a branch of the Rhine, flowing north from Arnhem through the green IJssel valley to the IJsselmeer at Kampen. At over 125 kilometres it is one of the longest rivers in the Netherlands. Only 10% of the Rhine's water flows via the IJssel — yet that small share made Kampen great.

At Kampen the river empties into the Ketelmeer. Here, at this strategic mouth, Kampen grew in the Middle Ages into one of the most powerful Hanseatic cities in the Low Countries. Everything transported along the IJssel — timber, grain, wine, salt — passed the quay that now lies right outside our door.

From 't Hanzehuys you see the broad water, the green floodplains on the far bank and in the distance the low outlines of Kampereiland. A panorama that changes constantly — with the light, the seasons and the wind.

Nature and seasons

The IJssel delta is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the Netherlands. The floodplains opposite Kampen are full of flowering willows and meadows teeming with wading birds in spring — lapwings, black-tailed godwits and spoonbills. In winter they sometimes flood, and the river takes on an imposing, broad character.

Geese and swans move in great flocks over the water. Kingfishers dart like blue arrows along the bank. On the horizon the outlines of Kampereiland take shape — the island formed by the branching of the river, accessible only by ferry.

The National Landscape IJssel Delta — of which Kampen forms the heart — is one of the ten National Landscapes of the Netherlands. Walking and cycling through this area gives you a picture of a Netherlands that seems barely to have changed in centuries.

Sunsets over the water

The broad IJssel acts as a natural mirror for the sky. When the sun sets in the west, the water turns orange, red and purple — a daily spectacle right outside your window. No two evenings are the same.

From the armchairs in front of the window in the guest room, you can enjoy the view of the IJssel in complete peace. A glass of wine on the table, the masts of the Brown Fleet silhouetted against the evening sky — that is 't Hanzehuys at its best.
